For the 2019 edition of The Art Show, Sperone Westwater presents a survey of works on paper by Susan Rothenberg, including important vintage and recent works. Beginning with the celebrated horse drawings of 1974, this presentation will chart the historical development of Rothenberg’s work in a range of media. The role of drawing in Rothenberg’s artistic practice is of such fundamental importance that it cannot be overstated. As with her paintings, her works on paper are characterized by an immediate, insistent graphic style: with charcoal, graphite, watercolor, crayon, tempera, acrylic, flashe and oil, she works, reworks, smudges, erases, and adds, creating in turn a working dialogue that is simultaneously deliberate and intuitive.
